The Stephen King Book Challenge

Are you up for a game? I’m thinking a tournament between all King’s books. This is how it works.

I have randomly paired the books two and two. You get to vote for the one you like the best of the two by sending me an email with the title in the subject line. There will be two pairs a day in the beginning and then one as we move on.

The winner of the two will advance to the next round where it will be put against the winner from the other pair. Then you get to vote again and the winner between these two moves up one place and so on until there’s only one book left. The Winner! This image will give you an idea of what it will look like. I will however not show you the pairs until it’s time to vote for them. No tactical voting here.

So, are you up for it? The first two pairs are up and running as we speak. Send mails to me and let the fun begin. You can vote on these two pairs until I put the next up.

Oh, and you can only vote for one in each pair.

In the September issue of Harper’s King has written something called Batman and Robin have an Altercation. I’m not sure if this is fiction or nonfiction but I’m sure we’ll find out very soon.

Lilja in the papers

As promised, here is the article about Lilja’s Library translated into English. It was done with Google translate and some touches from me but I hope it’ll give you the basics…

Spend his spare time on horror

Largest fan site on Stephen King run by Hans-Ake Lilja from Örebro

The goal was to meet and interview the author Stephen King. That he has done - several times. Hans-Ake Lilja from Örebro runs the world's biggest fan site about the horror master.

Back in 1996, when ordinary people was starting get Internet in their homes, Hans-Ake Lilja from Örebro created the website Lilja's Library about horror writer Stephen King.
- There were not too many good website about him, so I learned how to do my own. It was not that difficult in those days, says Hans-Åke but then he works as a software developer.
At first the site contained only text and the number of visitors was modest. 16 years later the site has grown to become the world's biggest fan site about Stephen King and the two dreams that Hans-Ake had from the beginning has now come true.
- One was to interview King, and I've got to do that twice over the phone. It took five years of exchanging emails with his assistant the first time. The second time it went a little faster, says Hans-Ake with a smile. The second dream was to meet the author, something he got to do when the King was visiting London for a publishing event.

It is difficult to understand both how big the site is in itself is as well as who big King is as an author. Lilja's Library currently has around 1.100 unique visitors each day and more than 13.000 people like the site on Facebook. And two years ago part of the website’s content was published as a book with the same name.
The author Stephen King has since 1974 published 68 books and been translated into around 40 languages. Today he releases about one or two books a year.
- In Sweden he’s been labeled as a horror writer and he is not as big here as he is in the US. It’s a pity that so few know that it’s King how’s written the books that both "The Green Mile" and "The Shawshank Redemption" is based on.
Why read so much by Stephen King?
- In addition to that they are good stories, they are also very fascinating. They often start out as very normal, everyday events that then turn into something else. Something scary.
- Fear is a very strong feeling. Joy and sorrow are as well but harder to write about. If you get an uncomfortable feeling when you read a book, then it’s usually a good book.

But so far, fear has not influenced Hans-Åke too negative.
- No, it's not like I have to sleep with the lights, he says with a laugh.
Perhaps that will change this fall though when he and his family goes on a dream vacation to the US where they will visit Universal Studios, which offers a different kind of tourist attraction.
- They will re-create the settings from “The Walking Dead” and I'll run with zombies smiles Hans-Åke. Maybe after that he’ll start sleeping with the lights on. Unless he himself turns into a zombie that is...

Russell Crowe as Roland?

Looks like Ron Howard wants Russell Crowe to play Roland... Any thoughts on that?

The multi-film and TV miniseries adaptation of Stephen King‘s epic novel cycle The Dark Tower isn’t dead yet, and it could end up marking the reunion of director Ron Howard and his A Beautiful Mind star Russell Crowe.

Deadline reports that within the next two weeks Warners will make a decision on whether to greenlight the very ambitious adaptation that was cut loose from Universal and developed without a studio until Warners started getting interested months ago.

Javier Bardem, who was attached to play Deschain for some time, through multiple stages of the difficult project, is no longer set for the role, says Deadline.

Win a signed book by King or Kirkman

Posted: August 1, 2012, 22:46
_
OK, attention all of you that’s interested in getting a signed book by Stephen King and and/or Robert Kirkman (creator of The Walking Dead). Most of you know that I just ended a contest in which you could win a signed copy of Wolves of the Calla by Stephen King and a very limited paperweight, right? Well, today all of you that didn’t win (which unfortunately is most of you since there was only one winner) get another chance.

One of my reader has been very kind to me and all of you and donated a copy of The Best American Short Stories 2007 that's signed by King. How about that? Almost like you can’t believe it but please do. It’s true and it can be yours.

Also, I have a signed (by Robert Kirkman) copy of Days Gone Bye to give to someone. It's the copy from the contest I ran some time ago at The Walking Dead News. But since I haven't gotten an address from the winner I haven't been able to send the prize and will now give it to someone else.

So, I have two signed books from my two favorite authors that wants’ new owners. Anyone interested in taking them off my hands? Well, I thought so. What should you do then to get the chance to win one of these signed books? Well, here is how:

Since this is a contest for books by both Stephen King and Robert Kirkman (and that I want to use it to promote both Lilja’s Library and The Walking Dead News (that’s OK right?)) you need to follow both Lilja’s Library on facebook and The Walking Dead News on facebook.

Once you have done that you also need to share or like one post on each page. Each share and like will be one entry to the contest and that’s all you need to do. Oh, and you have to do it before August 31st. I will draw the winner on September 1st. One winner from Lilja’s Library facebook page who will get the signed King book The Walking Dead News facebook page who will get the signed Kirkman book.

So, share and like all you can/want and you might be the lucky winner of one of these signed books…or if you are extremely lucky…both.

King and Kirkman never got to collaborate on The Walking Dead but I here is their chance …or at least their signatures. So, good luck to all of you and don’t forget that you need to follow both facebook pages to be entered.

Length of A Face in the Crowd

Today I got the first indication on the length of A Face in the Crowd. The info comes from Hodder & Stoughton in the UK who is also releasing the book as eBook and downloadable audio on August 21st.

And they told me the audio will have a running length of 79 mins. That can be compared with Stationay Bike which has a running length of 90 mins.

And the lucky winner is...

OK, the lucky winner of the signed book and paperweight has been drawn. Wanna know who it is? Guessed you would. Well, the lucky winner is…Glen Stone in the US. I have been in contact with Glen so this time it won’t be any rematches. However, check back here during the day of August 1st and you might still be the proud owner of a signed King book…

I’m also happy to tell you all that the donations you provided will just cover the shipping to the US which helps a lot. Thanks to all of you that donated!

Prequel to The Shining?

Posted: July 29, 2012, 23:56
_
King is releasing a sequel to The Shining and Warner is preparing a prequel. Here is what Bleeding Cool writes about it.

While Stephen King will soon release Dr. Sleep, his sequel to The Shining, Warner Bros. have started, very quietly, on early work that could lead to a prequel for their film version.

The project has a long way to go to the screen, but Warner Bros. have called in Laeta Kalogridis, Bradley Fischer and James Vanderbilt to produce the new film. Kalogridis worked with James Cameron on the script for Avatar, wrote his Battle Angel script, and also penned Scorsese’s Shutter Island; Vanderbilt drafted Zodiac and the original pass at The Amazing Spider-Man.

The LA Times tried to get an official statement from WB, but one was (predictably) not forthcoming.

It’s possible, then, that we’ll have duelling Shining spin-offs in a couple-few years. A prequel to Kubrick’s movie on one hand, and likely without the support of King; and an adaptation of his Dr. Sleep set up elsewhere.

My 6 goals; where are we?

Posted: July 28, 2012, 11:54
_
On January 1st of this year I posted 6 goals I had for 2012 and since almost 7of the 12 months have passed I think it's time to see how I'm doing...

Goal 1) I hope to do at least 5 cool interviews for you. Don’t know who yet but I have my sight set on some specific people…

Outcome 1) So far I have posted 6 interviews. However, since only 2 are King related I don't think I can say that this goal has been forfilled. Check out the interviews a href="interviews.php">here.

Goal 2) I hope to have at least 7 new cool contests for you during 2012.

Outcome 2) So far there has been 10 contests at Lilja's Library this year (the two ongoing included) and the 11th will start on August 1. Check!

Goal 3) I hope to get at least 15,000 followers on facebook. I know it’s a lot (twice what I have today) but you have to set your sights high, right?

Outcome 3) So far there are 13.353 followers and to reach this goal I need an average of about 10 new followers / day for the rest of the year. Probably not going to happen...

Goal 4) I hope to get 3,000 followers on twitter. Might be harder than goal 3.

Outcome 4) Today 2,767 follows Lilja's Library on twitter and I would need about 1,5 new followers each day for the rest of the year to reach 3,000. Probably not going to happen.

Goal 5) I will keep reporting the latest on King for you and hopefully deliver what you want when you want it.

Outcome 5) You tell me. I think I'm doing a pretty good job though :-)

Goal 6) Finally get the new section at Lilja’s Library up and running. I can’t say what it is yet but it has to do with movie props…

Outcome 6) Done. Marv's Museum opened on January 5th.

S0, there are some things left to do and some are done. Thanks for your support and I'll work as hard as I can to try and reach the goals I haven't already reached befor the year comes to an end.

Carrie: Behind the scene

It looks like behind the scenes footage from the Carrie remake found its way onto the Internet earlier today. No one seems to know how but once the production found out about it it’s gone. I didn’t get a chance to see it myself and now I can’t find it anywhere but from what I understand the Carrie looks a tiny bit too pretty…

Dean Evers, an elderly widower, sits in front of the television with nothing better to do than waste his leftover evenings watching baseball. It’s Rays/Mariners, and David Price is breezing through the line-up. Suddenly, in a seat a few rows up beyond the batter, Evers sees the face of someone from decades past, someone who shouldn’t be at the ballgame, shouldn’t be on the planet. And so begins a parade of people from Evers’s past, all of them occupying that seat behind home plate. Until one day Dean Evers sees someone even eerier...

A Face in the Crowd will be available on Kindle, Nook, eReader, iBooks, Android Play and more. The audiobook read by Craig Wasson will be available in both Mp3 and CD Mp3 formats from Amazon, iTunes and more.

Don't forget that there are two contests going on here at Lilja's Library. One that is pretty easy (maybe even to easy) that could give you a signed King book and a very limited paper weight. Check out that one here.

Then there is another one that is a tiny bit harder that can give you some King reading this summer. All you need to do is show me who you are. And remember, it doesn’t have to be a photo of you (even if it can be), it should be a photo illustrating who you are. Check that one out here.

Good Luck!
