Carrie Panel

The NYCC crowd got an exclusive first look at Carrie‘s teaser trailer, which begins with a helicopter shot showing the school gym on fire, but then shows a trail of destruction leading throughout Carrie‘s small town…ending with a close-up on a blood-covered Moretz. The teaser features a cacophony of voices talking about Carrie — including the memorable line “She wasn’t some monster. She was just a girl.” — implying, perhaps, that the remake would adhere close to the structure of King’s original novel, which was written in a pseudo-epistolary style. (Brian De Palma’s original Carrie film in the late ’70s jettisoned that structure in favor of a more straightforward linear narrative.)

Description of the teaser.

In The Tall Grass release in the UK

_
Interesting press release:

Hachette sister companies The Orion Publishing Group and Hodder & Stoughton are thrilled to be jointly publishing a brand new, and terrifying, story written by bestselling authors Stephen King and Joe Hill.

In The Tall Grass begins with a sister and brother who pull off to the side of the road after hearing a young boy crying for help from beyond the tall grass. Within minutes they are disoriented, in deeper than seems possible, and they've lost one another, while the boy's cries are growing more and more desperate . . .

What follows is a terrifying, entertaining, and masterfully told tale, as only Stephen King and Joe Hill can deliver.

‘I loved working with Joe. Our styles mesh pretty well. Maybe it's the similar DNA. Certainly we feed on each other's energy, and as the old man of the combo, I'm impressed with Joe's narrative drive and narrative clarity. Working with your kid is an amazing gift.’ – Stephen King

‘Working with my Dad is like buckling up for a ride in the meanest, fastest, baddest eighteen-wheeler on the roads. He's got a V12 engine under the hood; all the rest of us writer-types are stuck with little sewing machine motors. Been learning from him my whole life and I doubt I've picked up a tenth of what he knows.’ – Joe Hill

Originally an Esquire magazine exclusive, this story will be released as audio download and eBook original on the 9th October. The eBook will retail for £1.99 and the audio book for £9.99. It’s a must-read for fans of either author and, even more excitingly, the eBook includes an exclusive extract of Joe Hill’s forthcoming novel NOS4R2, and an extract of Stephen King’s forthcoming novel Doctor Sleep.

This thrilling collaboration of King and Hill will be supported by an exciting collaborative marketing and publicity campaign from both publishers.

‘In the Tall Grass is a brilliant, scary and suspenseful short story from two great writing talents. We are delighted in turn to combine the creative expertise of two great publishing houses to promote this terrific collaboration’ - say joint editors Philippa Pride at Hodder and Gillian Redfearn at Orion.

New Stephen King Novel
From Hard Case Crime
COMING JUNE 4TH 2013

Called “the best new American publisher to appear in the last decade” by Neal Pollack in The Stranger, Hard Case Crime revives the storytelling and visual style of the pulp paperbacks of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. The line features an exciting mix of lost pulp masterpieces from some of the most acclaimed crime writers of all time and gripping new novels from the next generation of great hardboiled authors, all with new painted covers in the grand pulp style. Authors range from modern-day bestsellers such as Pete Hamill, Donald E. Westlake, Lawrence Block and Ed McBain to Golden Age stars like Mickey Spillane (creator of “Mike Hammer”), Erle Stanley Gardner (creator of “Perry Mason”), Wade Miller (author of Touch of Evil), and Cornell Woolrich (author of Rear Window).

Joyland by Stephen King - Coming June 4th 2013 (Link to Large Cover Art

Stephen King commented, “I love crime, I love mysteries, and I love ghosts. That combo made Hard Case Crime the perfect venue for this book, which is one of my favorites. I also loved the paperbacks I grew up with as a kid, and for that reason, we’re going to hold off on e-publishing this one for the time being. Joyland will be coming out in paperback, and folks who want to read it will have to buy the actual book.”

King’s previous Hard Case Crime novel, The Colorado Kid, became a national bestseller and inspired the television series “Haven,” now going into its third season on SyFy.

“Joyland is a breathtaking, beautiful, heartbreaking book,” said Charles Ardai, Edgar- and Shamus Award-winning editor of Hard Case Crime. “It’s a whodunit, it’s a carny novel, it’s a story about growing up and growing old, and about those who don’t get to do either because death comes for them before their time. Even the most hardboiled readers will find themselves moved. When I finished it, I sent a note saying, ‘Goddamn it, Steve, you made me cry.’"

Nick Landau, Titan Publisher, added: “Stephen King is one of the fiction greats, and I am tremendously proud and excited to be publishing a brand-new book of his under the Hard Case Crime imprint.”

JOYLAND will feature new painted cover art by the legendary Robert McGinnis, the artist behind the posters for the original Sean Connery James Bond movies and “Breakfast At Tiffany’s,” and by Glen Orbik, the painter of more than a dozen of Hard Case Crime’s most popular covers, including the cover for The Colorado Kid.

Since its debut in 2004, Hard Case Crime has been the subject of enthusiastic coverage by a wide range of publications including The New York Times, USA Today, Time, Playboy, U.S. News & World Report, BusinessWeek, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Sun-Times, The Houston Chronicle, New York magazine, the New York Post and Daily News, Salon, Reader’s Digest, Parade and USA Weekend,as well as numerous other magazines, newspapers, and online media outlets. The Chicago Sun-Times wrote, “Hard Case Crime is doing a wonderful job publishing both classic and contemporary ‘pulp’ novels in a crisp new format with beautiful, period-style covers. These modern ‘penny dreadfuls’ are worth every dime.” Playboy praised Hard Case Crime’s “lost masterpieces,” writing “They put to shame the work of modern mystery writers whose plots rely on cell phones and terrorists.” And the Philadelphia City Paper wrote, “Tired of overblown, doorstop-sized thrillers…? You’ve come to the right place. Hard Case novels are as spare and as honest as a sock in the jaw.”

Other upcoming Hard Case Crime titles include The Cocktail Waitress, a never-before-published novel by James M. Cain, author of The Postman Always Rings Twice, Mildred Pierce, and Double Indemnity, and an epic first novel called The Twenty-Year Death by Ariel S. Winter that has won advance raves from authors such as Peter Straub, James Frey, Alice Sebold, John Banville, David Morrell and Stephen King.

Here is the cover for Joyland.

Not only is King going retro with the setting of his upcoming novel, he’s also sticking to a tried-and-true format. “I love crime, I love mysteries, and I love ghosts,” he said in the press release. “I also loved the paperbacks I grew up with as a kid, and for that reason, we’re going to hold off on e-publishing this one for the time being. Joyland will be coming out in paperback, and folks who want to read it will have to buy the actual book.”

Charles Ardai, editor of Hard Case Crime, promises a layered, genre-crossing story. “Joyland is a breathtaking, beautiful, heartbreaking book,” he said. “It’s a whodunit, it’s a carny novel, it’s a story about growing up and growing old, and about those who don’t get to do either because death comes for them before their time. Even the most hard-boiled readers will find themselves moved. When I finished it, I sent a note saying, ‘Goddamn it, Steve, you made me cry.’ ”

Press release for Doctor Sleep

Press release for Doctor Sleep from Hodder & Stoughton:

STEPHEN KING to return to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in 2013

Hodder has acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Chuck Verrill of Darhansoff &Verrill in DOCTOR SLEEP. King says he wanted to know what happened to Danny Torrance, the boy at the heart of The Shining, after his terrible experience in the Overlook Hotel. The instantly riveting, stand-alone novel, Doctor Sleep picks up the story of the now middle-aged Dan, working at a hospice in rural New Hampshire, and the very special twelve-year old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals.

On highways across America, a tribe of people called The True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless - mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and tween Abra Stone learns, The True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the ‘steam’ that children with the ‘shining’ produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him and a job at a nursing home where his remnant ‘shining’ power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes ‘Doctor Sleep.’

Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted readers of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.

Hardcover publication of the novel will be September 24, 2013, and readers can hear a taster if they buy the CD or digital download of King's novel, THE WIND THROUGH THE KEYHOLE, because he reads the Prologue from it.

Joyland; King's next book

Charles Ardai talks Joyland and Haven:

CA: Yes, JOYLAND. It’s coming out in June 2013, and it’s perfect summer reading. It’s actually set partly on a beach, in the summer, so you have no excuse not to buy a copy and take it with you to the beach next summer. (I do realize that by the same reasoning you should only read FRANKENSTEIN in a castle during a lightning storm, but never mind.) We’re keeping the book under wraps until we’re closer to the publication date, so you won’t get any spoilers from me, but I’ll tell you it’s about a college student who gets a summer job working at a small-town amusement park and discovers some very strange things going on. Anyone who wants more info can find a bit on our website, www.hardcasecrime.com. I’ll tell you this: I’m a hardboiled sort of guy, but I was crying by the end of JOYLAND. Anyone who can read this book without shedding a tear shed is made of stone.

Press release for season 3 of Haven

'NEW YORK – September 13, 2012 – The scary mysteries and odd eccentricities of this small coastal Maine town will continue to unfold when Haven, Syfy’s hit drama series, returns for its third season on Friday, September 21 at 10PM (ET/PT).

In the premiere, Haven picks up immediately following the events of the gripping season two finale with Audrey (Emily Rose) having been kidnapped; Nathan (Lucas Bryant) warned against pursuing a romantic relationship with Audrey; and Duke (Eric Balfour) seemingly engaged in a fight to the death with Nathan after he discovers his family lineage is to kill Haven citizens with Troubles

This season’s guest stars include Iain Glen (Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey), Bree Williamson (Gossip Girl, One Life to Live), Laura Vandervoort (Smallville, White Collar), Edge (WWE Superstar), Dorian Missick (Southland, The Cape), Kate Kelton (Harold and Kumar, American Psycho 2), Nolan North (Uncharted video game series, Pretty Little Liars), and Claudia Black (Uncharted video game series, Farscape).

Following last year’s successful innovative Twitter campaign, season three will introduce online viewers to a new entity in the Haven mythology—The Guard. Mysterious and deeply entrenched in the history of Haven, The Guard has hijacked Haven social media channels to get their message out—if you are troubled, we can help #EscapeToHaven by @TheGuardHaven. The Guard—represented by Kate Kelton, who portrays ’Jordan McKee” — has taken over Facebook (facebook.com/haven), YouTube (youtube.com/syfyimaginegreater) and Twitter profiles for Haven (Twitter.com/TheGuardHaven), using these social media channels to tell the story of Haven, and to attract new “recruits” to Haven.

Haven, based on the novella The Colorado Kid from renowned author Stephen King, follows former FBI agent Audrey Parker, who becomes a cop in the small town of Haven, Maine, and soon discovers the town’s many secrets, which also hold the key to unlocking the mysteries of her lost past.

During its second season, Haven averaged 2.55 million total viewers and 995,000 Adults18-49, rising four percent among total viewers and five percent among Adults 18-49 compared to season one (Live +7 data)."

The Stephen King Book Challenge

Are you up for a game? I’m thinking a tournament between all King’s books. This is how it works.

I have randomly paired the books two and two. You get to vote for the one you like the best of the two by sending me an email with the title in the subject line. There will be two (or more) pairs a day in the beginning and then one as we move on.

The winner of the two will advance to the next round where it will be put against the winner from the other pair. Then you get to vote again and the winner between these two moves up one place and so on until there’s only one book left. The Winner!

So, are you up for it? The first two pairs are up and running as we speak. Send mails to me and let the fun begin. You can vote on these two pairs until I put the next up.
