Variety reports that The Outsider has been canceled.

HBO has made the decision to pass on making a second season of the horror-crime drama, which is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. News of the effective cancelation comes around nine months after the show ended a successful 10-episode first season run. MRC, the studio behind “Outsider,” is set to shop season 2 around to other premium networks and streamers, according to sources.

King Talks TV & That 2021 Will See 2 New Books

Entertainment Weekly has a great interview with King where he reveals there will be 2 new books next year and about his success on TV. Here are some highlights...

About books coming 2021:

There will be two next year. I don't want people to get used to that or think that that's the norm. It's not. But it's just the way things happened. So there is another, but I don't want to say anything about it yet.

About The Outsider

There's going to be a second season of The Outsider as soon as they can get the production going.

HBO hasn’t announced it yet but King know where it’s going...

I know exactly where it's going because I have seen some of the scripts. I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you. I'll just say that it's really great and a real spooky paranormal element.

His thought about if If it Bleeds could be used as basis for a second season of The Outsider?

I don't think so. It's really complicated because of the difference in the two story lines makes it difficult to figure out how that could possibly be done in the world of Richard Price's creation of The Outsider. But if Mr. Mercedes was greenlit for a fourth season, that would be in the realm of possibility.

King on the new Flagg:

Alexander Skarsgard is a good Randall Flagg, he just knocked it out of the park

The new ending of The Stand:

I was able to bring things back around. I've had an idea for that final episode that I always kind of regretted not writing it in the book — the book's long enough as it is. I can't tell you anything about the episode other than to say that I've seen a rough cut of it, and I think it's fine.

Will There Be (Do We Want) More Of The Outsider?

The Outsider was a big success for HBO and now co-star and director Jason Bateman commented on it.

“I know that they’re talking about it and Richard Price is playing with some ideas and taking some first steps as to what that second year might and feel like,” Bateman told Collider. “Obviously, it’s a complete free-ball because the first season exhausted 100% of [Stephen King’s] book, the IP. So, it’s really all up to him. I never like to step on the lawn of the writers. It’s something that I’ve always stuck with on Ozark. I leave Chris Mundy completely alone and I do my job as a director once I get the script. I chime in every once in a while and offer my opinion, but it’s always for the writer to take if they want and discard if they want.”

HBO has not officially weighed in on whether or not The Outsider will continue.

What do you think? Do we want a second season?

Could There Be A Season 2 Of The Outsider?

Here is an interview with Richard Price about The Outsider where he also hints that there might be a second season.

There’s no telling if “The Outsider” will end like the book or on its own terms (further episodes have not been screened for critics), but Price is already planning for the future. He said he was already working on Season 2 when IndieWire spoke to him in January.

“It’s like pulling a rabbit out of a glass hat — of course there will be another [if HBO wants one],” Price said. “There’s no such thing as a series that, if it does well, they’re not going to want a second season.”

Could a second season be based on the Holly story in If it Bleeds?
