The movie Abraham’s Boys is based on a short story by Joe Hill, found in 20th Century Ghosts. It tells the story of Abraham Van Helsing and his family, including his wife and two sons. His sons aren’t aware that he is a famous vampire hunter—at least not until some way into the story. But when they find out, Abraham decides it’s time for them to follow in his footsteps and continue his work.He forces them to drive stakes through the hearts of people he claims are vampires. They’re also made to cut off the heads of these same people, and then bury them. But something is wrong...
Are those poor souls really vampires, or has Abraham gone crazy after all those years of hunting? Well, you’ll have to see for yourself.
The movie takes place in 1915, 18 years after the death of Count Dracula. The family lives isolated, out in the middle of nowhere—just as Abraham wants it. But when his wife gets sick, he becomes convinced the family is in danger and that they need to act.
While watching the movie, it feels older than it actually is. Not just because it’s set in 1915, but because it almost looks like it could have been shot in the 1960s or 70s. At first, I was a bit surprised by this, but then I liked it. It gives the film an old-fashioned feeling that works perfectly with the story.
As Abraham Van Helsing, we see none other than Titus Welliver—perhaps best known for playing detective Bosch in the hit series Bosch and he does a great job in the part. He’s a bit stiff, but that’s just how I want him in this role. Abraham really feels like a stiff and emotionally closed-off person, and that’s exactly what we get. Perfect casting, if you ask me.
Lilja's final words about Abraham's Boys:
Abraham’s Boys offers a very different take on vampires and the legendary vampire hunter Van Helsing—but a good one. However, if you’re expecting a lot of neck biting and blood pouring all over the screen, you’ll be disappointed. This is not that kind of movie.
